Information about the Dangers of Vaping
As you may have seen in recent news reports, serious illness related to vaping are on the rise. These illnesses have potentially devastating adverse effects. As of September 12, 2019, 16 cases of vaping-related pulmonary illnesses have been reported in WNY and more than 50 state wide. These ilnesses cause severe lung impairement that requires hospitalization, admission to the ICU and breathing assistance and a ventilator in some cases.
The New York State Department of Health is currently urging everyone to stop using vape products until more information can be learned about what exactly is causing these diseases and what additional dangers vaping can pose. We have linked to two fact sheets from the CDC about what parents, teachers and coaches need to know about vaping. Additionally, the Erie County Department of Health has set up a website with a number of resources about e-cigarettes and pulmonary illnesses.

Talk to your doctor or other medical provider
For parents and teachers, the Chautauqua County Department of Health has put together a visual dictionary of what the different e-cigarette products are and what they look like. That guide can be found here.
The CDC also has a numer of recommendations regardless of what is discovered about these vape-related illnesses:
- Youth and young adults should not use e-cigarette products.
Women who are pregnant should not use e-cigarette products. - Adults who do not currently use tobacco products should not start using e-cigarette products.
- If you do use e-cigarette products, you should not buy these products off the street (for example, e-cigarette products with THC or other cannabinoids).
- You should not modify e-cigarette products or add any substances to these products that are not intended by the manufacturer.
- Adult smokers who are attempting to quit should use evidence-based treatments, including counseling and FDA-approved medications. If you need help quitting tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, contact your doctor or other medical provider.
