Students with disabilities participate in the general education environment to the greatest extent appropriate. Eligibility for special education services is determined by the Committee on Special Education (CSE), which develops an Individualized Education Program (IEP) based on each student's unique strengths and needs. In keeping with the principle of Least Restrictive Environment (LRE), the CSE considers a range of supports and services to ensure students receive the assistance they need while remaining as fully included as possible in their educational setting. The following services may be considered as part of this continuum of supports: 
 
Related Services 
  • Related services such as Speech/Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, or Counseling services are provided to students with disabilities as recommended on their IEP. 
  • Related service providers may implement services in individual, small group, general education, or special class settings. 
Consultant Teacher Services 
  • Special Education teachers collaborate with general education teachers through co-teaching and consultation in classrooms across all school buildings. They provide support within selected academic classes on a daily basis, helping students work toward the goals outlined in their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). In addition to supporting individual students, Special Education teachers contribute to the overall learning environment by enhancing instructional support for all students in the classroom. 
  • Special Education teachers can provide assistance directly to students or indirectly through collaboration and consultation with general education teachers throughout the school day, based on individual student needs and IEP recommendations. 
Resource Room Program
  • Special Education teachers provide a daily, or every other day, period of support to students as determined by the Committee on Special Education and as indicated on their Individual Education Plan (IEP).  Students may work individually or in small groups to develop and strengthen skills in specific areas identified in their Individual Education Plan (IEP). 
Special Class 
  • Special classes are provided on a daily basis to students with disabilities who are grouped based on similar educational needs for the purpose of being provided a special educational program. These classes vary according to the number of students being serviced in each and by the number of service providers supporting their program.
  • Special classes address either academic and behavioral, or functional needs of some of our students who have not found success in the general education setting with the special education services listed above.
