    • Congratulations to those students trying some of the review material I have assigned.
    • This week I want to begin posting some new content that you should cover before taking your AP exam.  We still have a month and a half so that should be ample time to go over some new stuff and review.  The new material is on Unit 6 which is mostly 3 chapters in your book 16, 17, 20 and a little of 18.  THESE ARE IMPORTANT CHAPTERS.
    • I want to start in order, with Chapter 16, by having you all take a look at your chapter 16 presentation.  There are a bunch of quick videos and links that you should not overlook within the presentation.
    • TRY SOMETHING NEW!  Add something to our collaboration space about the contributions of the many scientists involved in unlocking the secrets to DNA being the genetic material.  If you add just a single piece of knowledge that you obtained on section 16.1, we can create a study sheet, not only for the chapter but for your AP exam as well!! Remember, the exam is open notes!

    • GREAT JOB TO THOSE OF YOU WHO CRUSHED THAT NEARPOD ACTIVITY!!  All that completed the presentation, seemed to grasp the concepts I was looking for on the two open ended questions!
    • I have added two simple videos to finish the week, both are on selective breeding, which you should have read about in your genetics presentation.
    • The second link is an EDPUZZZLE video with a few questions sprinkled in, and really short!  Finish this for a quick assignment check.
    • Last, I would like you to write a quick blurb (2-3 sentences) in your homeork folder, as to why selective breeding certain animals for desired traits can be bad. What can this type of "breeding sometimes lead to?
AP Biology:  ZOOM ZOOM - Wednesday 9-10am
(There will be a 45 minute abbreviated AP exam.  Details as to the date, time, and method are still to come)
    • Congratulations to those students trying some of the review material I have assigned.
    • Try logging into your AP CollegeBoard account.  There is a ton of information on the upcoming AP exam.  It is kind of a busy website, but if you get used to navigating it, you can look at AP questions (MC and FR) from last years test, and all units that will be covered on the 2020 AP exam.  **NEW STUFF in your folders
    • I have added an AP CollegeBoard tab in your AP Biology review folder.  In it you will find a link to the webcast video that was shared by the Collegeboard with AP teachers.  It talks about what to expect on your exam, screening for cheating, open book format of the test, and 14 minutes in a brief description of your free response questions.
    • I have also added an AP BIO Unit 2 quiz within your Quizizz tab, in case you want to brush up on your Unit 2 content (The Membrane/stucture, function and transport).

(I will leave this up until we move on from chapter 16

TRY SOMETHING NEW!

    • CHECK OUT YOUR NEW OFFICE HOURS, I PUSHED IT BACK AN HOUR TO 9AM!!!!!!!
    • Alright, your last task for this unit is a familiar form of review!!
    • In your Heat folder, click on the little review book tab and at home I would like you to create a little book of review.  This is no different then what we used to do in class.
    • You can either print the sheet out with the headings already printed or use a blank sheet of paper and write them in yourself.
    • Don't forget, on each page, write the definition, and include a drawing depicting an example of the phenomena described.
Living Environment Class:  ZOOM ZOOM - (Middle School) Thursday 10-11am       (High School) Tuesday 9-10am
(Lets assume there will still be a Regents exam at the end of the year by covering some of the topics we have yet to reach this year)
    • CHECK OUT YOUR NEW OFFICE HOURS (if you are in my 8th grade class), I PUSHED IT BACK AN HOUR TO 10AM!!!!!!!
    • Looks like many of you were able to survive a million years and all the hurddles nature brings along with it!!
    • I would like you to check out this edpuzzlevideo on Natural Selection, that I included in your Evolution folder under, " Natural Selection tab."  This video focuses on how random events can lead to modifications/variations that are better adapted to an organisms environment!
    • Thats it.  Give it a watch and answer the questions embedded in the video.

    • I was going to assign you another review quiz and video but thought I would kill 2 birds with one stone.
    • Go into your AP Bio Review folder and under the EDPUZZLE tab there is a link.  Click it and join the class by using either your email or username and password.  I can't remember which it prompts you with.
    • Once in, you should see the video.  It is a review lesson on enzymes with embedded questons.
    • Pay attention to the beginning, when the host goes over a water potential question from the lesson before.  This is a concept from way back in the beginning of the year.  This is a good opportunity to see an equation from your reference sheet being put into action.  Remember all equations will be given to you, you just have to know how to use them.
    • This is another good reason to utilize the AP review lessons given through the college board website.

    • CHECK OUT YOUR NEW OFFICE HOURS, I PUSHED IT BACK AN HOUR TO 9AM!!!!!!!
    • I have assigned two short EDPUZZLES for the beginning of the week.  Both videos are short, and great examples on how to build an interactive demonstration of an energy wave at home, using some very simple household items.  You can find them under the CANDY WAVE MACHINE tab.
    • They describe slightly different aspects which is why I assigned both.  Each video is only 4 minutes with a handful of questions each.
    • In past years we have built this in class.  If you have some of the items at home, give it a whirl.  Marshmallows can be easily substituted for the candy.

    • 1 WEEK TO GO!
    • Alright, I have added a tab called AP PRACTICE EXAM #1 to your AP Review Folder.
    • There is a link to a youtube video with 2 questions, along with a timer that will help simulate the actual testing experience.
    • Included, is a word document for each question.  They are kind of hard to see on the youtube video. Try typing your responses in the word documents that I inserted and submit them to your homework folder for review.
    • **Before trying question 2 of the practice exam.  Watch the crash course on photosynthesis.  It is only 13 minutes long but we did not cover this in class.  Remember, the processes of photosynthesis (anabolic) and cell respiration (catabolic) are very similar in nature yet technically the inverse of one another.

Learning opportunities from 5/14/2020-5/17/2020                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       A Little Inspiration   Inky Johnson "It's Not Just About You"

    • CHECK OUT YOUR NEW OFFICE HOURS, I PUSHED IT BACK AN HOUR TO 9AM!!!!!!!
    • Heyyoooo!
    • In your Energy waves folder there is a tab labeled "BATMAN."  Use the link within, to watch an inspirational TEDTALK on a man who uses wave energy to uniquely perceive his surroundings and help himself and others navigate the world.
    • This is a great mesh of the physical sciences, along with some biology you have to look forward to.
    • After watching the video, I would like you all to write me a short, grammatically correct, 5-7 sentence paragraph.  In your paragraph, be sure to describe and explain in your own words how Daniel Kish navigates and makes sense of the world around him.  Be sure to use at least 3 physical science terms from your notes relating to sound energy in your explanation.
    • Create a tab within your homework folder or upload your summary into your homework folder when you complete your summary response.

    • Almost there!
    • As I told many of you earlier.  I have included a last review link in your AP Review folder.  It is a condensed crash course on various forms of cell communication.  I would highly recommend watching it and would be fairly confident in assuming that one or both of your questions on Monday, will involve some explanations involving cell communication.
    • The tab is labeled "Various Forms of Cell Communication."
    • In addition to the AP review crash course, I have thrown in two relatively short videos on Nerve Cell Specific Communication.  Remember that neighboring cells communicate based off of the interaction of various molecules and their receptors.  However, these videos will familiarize you with some nerve cell specific terminology.
    • When you finish, take a look at 2019 Free Response Question #4 and try it out.
    • In addition to looking at and responding to any questions you are working on, I will extend some additional office hours at our regular time (9am) on Friday and on Sunday at 8pm for any questions or concerns you may have, or if you just would like to touch base with me before your test.
    • Keep pushing forward and keep an eye out for your e-ticket which should be sent to your AP email by this weekend.

    • Goodbye Spring, hellloooooo summer.  I hope you all enjoyed your memorial day weekend!
    • I have an easy experiment that you should all be able to try at home!  Check out the Amazing Light Tricks tab in your energy waves folder and complete the very brief edpuzzle.
    • After you complete the edpuzzle, try the experiment yourself, at home.
    • When complete, take a picture of your experiment and provide a 2-3 sentence explanation of this mystifying phenomena using some terminology you have learned about the behavior of light energy.
    • Upload you response and picture into your homework folder!

Living Environment Class:  ZOOM ZOOM - (Middle School) Thursday 10-11am       (High School) Tuesday 9-10am
(Lets assume there will still be a Regents exam at the end of the year by covering some of the topics we have yet to reach this year)
    • I hope you all had an amazing memorial day weekend!!!  Pretty pumped about the weather.
    • For those of you who braved watching some human botfly extractions......I TOLD YOU SO!
    • I am going to lay out both your assignments for the week today.  You will have the rest of the week (Sunday) until I post something new.
    • First, locate the tab Limiting Factors and Population tab in your Ecology unit folder and watch/complete the EDPUZZLE.
    • If you can and wish to exceed expectations, try the "Oh Deer" lab, located within your labs tab.  This lab is easiest to conduct if you have 4 or more people in your family and can convince them to play!!  This is typically one of my lab favorites with students during the spring and is a great opportunity to get outside and run around.
    • The first two pages of the lab are directions and should be pretty simple to try.  I can also explain it to you on Thursday during zoom hours if you are still confused.
